Government Mandated Paid Sick Leave

In November 2008, City of Milwaukee voters approved a referendum forwarded by “9 to 5, the National Association of Working Women,” which would require businesses located or operating in Milwaukee to provide up to nine days of paid sick leave for all their employees.

The MMAC believed this ordinance was bad economic policy, killing jobs by making Milwaukee a high-cost island in which to do business. We also strongly believed that this ordinance was bad law and violated both state statutes and the Wisconsin Constitution. As a result, we sued to block implementation of this job-killing mandate.

In June 2009, our lawsuit was victorious in Milwaukee Circuit Court and the sick leave mandate was overturned. 9 to 5 subsequently appealed this decision, and Appeals Court referred the case directly to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

This legal fight has been and continues to be a costly one for MMAC. However, it is a fight we do not believe we can sit out if we are to credibly advocate for a competitive business climate in the Milwaukee area. We encourage you to learn more about this issue and how you can add your support to our efforts.

Immediate Action Alert
We encourage you to donate to the legal efforts to overturn the Mandated Sick Leave Ordinance passed in the City of Milwaukee. While it may be well-intentioned, this ordinance is detrimental to the growth of business in this region. The only way to avoid the burdensome financial costs to create, modify and manage a complying plan is through support of the lawsuit.
