Welcome to the first edition of Milwaukee Commerce. Well, ok, more like the 892nd edition. While we felt it was time for a different kind of publication and a different focus, the name has actually been around for 89 years and frankly, the name still says it all. At the end of the day for our members, it’s all about commerce.

Many factors influence the success of commerce in metro Milwaukee. And you’ve told us, often emphatically, how particular issues make or break your ability to grow and create jobs. Health care has been on that list a long time. With changes enacted at the national level, we thought this was a good time to take an in-depth look at what’s happening with health care locally, with insightful perspectives from members in the trenches.

This quarterly magazine offers the advantage of tackling larger issues from the unique viewpoint of the metro Milwaukee business community. At the same time, we’ve expanded our electronic communications to focus on timely public policy issues, and “insider” business community information. We are also making it easier for you to connect with fellow members through events and programs. Check out our redesigned website, mmac.org, for even more chamber info.

As you’ll see throughout the pages of this publication, some things change, while some stay the same. Milwaukee has a long tradition of high-quality health care providers and services, as well as a long history of higher costs. But we’ve also started a new tradition – one that recognizes the difference wellness and prevention can have on both cost and quality. We should be proud to call Milwaukee “Well City USA” with our recent honor from the Wellness Council of America.

Please let me know your thoughts on our new Milwaukee Commerce – but after 89 years, let’s stick with the name.
