Technology Education & Literacy in Schools (TEALS)

Help us close the computer science gap.
Computer science (CS) skills empower young people to compete in today’s economy. Students are eager to learn CS—yet most high schools are unable to offer courses.

>>Volunteer to teach CS
>>Become a TEALs school
What is the TEALS Program?
Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) is a Microsoft Philanthropies program that connects classroom teachers with tech-industry volunteers to create sustainable CS programs. Volunteers support teachers as they learn to teach CS independently over time.

TEALS by the numbers (2018-2019 school year)
Picture
16,000 students
The TEALS program serves nearly 16,000 students at 494 high schools in the United States and British Columbia, Canada.

Picture
1,450 tech volunteers
TEALS is powered by 1,450 tech volunteers from nearly 700 companies.

Picture
35% female students
35% of students are female, 34% are underrepresented minorities, and nearly 18% of schools are in rural communities.

Picture
8% above national average
TEALS students scored 8% higher than the national average on the 2018 AP Computer Science A exam.

Bring computer science to your school and community
Help educate the next generation of innovators. We’re asking teachers, school administrators, parents, students, and tech professionals to join us in the effort.

Tech professional volunteers
Volunteers with a strong background in computer science and programming form the backbone of TEALS. We need people like you to volunteer to team teach computer science to help close the opportunity gap for thousands of students. >>Volunteer with TEALS

Teachers and administration
Our mission is to help classroom teachers learn to teach CS and build CS programs at their schools. Teachers partner with TEALS volunteers to team teach classes and prepare to teach CS on their own, while administrators provide invaluable program support. >>Bring TEALS to your school

Students and advocates
We work with students, parents, advocates, business owners and local leaders to help bring computer science opportunities to high school students. >>Learn more about TEALS

What kind of impact can you make?
You can make a lasting impact. Each industry volunteer and partner teacher who participates in the TEALS program creates a ripple effect, directly impacting the students you teach and the countless students who will study computer science in the future.

Ready to volunteer?
Has computational thinking and computer science impacted your life and career in positive ways? Pass it on! Help students gain access to these critical skills by becoming a TEALS volunteer.
