People seek careers that allow them to enjoy their work while making a positive impact on those they serve. If you ask MMAC’s Vice President of Member Engagement Barb Smith about her job, she’ll tell you she’s found just that.
Smith began at MMAC in June 1996, hired by former M7 Executive Director Jim Paetsch. For nearly 29 years she
“I am passionate about helping our members, making sure their businesses succeed and connecting them with the resources they need,” she said.
A few years ago, Smith launched MMAC’s Leadership Council program. The program hinges on three core pillars: access, input and impact. Approximately 100 C-level professionals come together to build meaningful connections, gain exclusive access to economic forecasting and insider perspectives as well as drive regional growth.
“What I think I do best is connect our members and ensure that they see value in their membership,” said Smith.
Smith has witnessed MMAC’s transformation throughout her 29-year tenure. When she first started, MMAC was what Smith referred to as a “behind-the-scenes” organization. Today, the association shares its legislative agenda with the business community and proudly displays the organization’s strategies to help move the region forward.
“We want to make this region prosperous,” said Smith. “MMAC is the conduit between businesses and what is happening in the industry.”
According to Smith, MMAC’s active support of Milwaukee’s business community is only one of many reasons she is enthusiastic about her work. Additionally, she enjoys learning about a diverse range of industries, helping the next generation of leaders and keeping up to date with regional developments. She is also delighted to see the longevity and success of member businesses that she initially helped bring into the association.
“I am really proud of this city,” said Smith. “Milwaukee’s come a long way.”
Outside of her work at MMAC, Smith has a long list of hobbies. While she does not have a pet of her own, she enjoys pet-sitting for friends and family. Smith is a Wisconsin sports lover and a season ticket holder for the Green Bay Packers. She also likes playing golf, hiking, reading, listening to podcasts and spending time with friends and family.
