Dear Members,
The Milwaukee Public Schools $252 million referendum result was not the one we were hoping for. We do, however, accept the will of the electorate in their decision to pass this measure.
Informing voters on a measure made public just a few short months ago was a heavy lift. It took a lot of hard work and resources. We appreciate the support we received from many.
With a $252 million referendum now passed, it’s imperative MPS uses these additional resources to improve student outcomes. The school district must adopt a long-term strategy that is both transparent and bold. With a vast majority of students performing below grade level throughout the district, the status quo is no longer an option.
These students – which make up half of the students in the city – are vital in the region’s talent pipeline. Our employers will rely on that talent to fill the jobs of the future. Our community, its families and, most importantly, our children deserve public schools that set students up to succeed. It’s our view that every child, no matter where they attend, is entitled to quality education.
Despite our opposition to the referendum, MMAC vows to continue its work with MPS. We partner with them on a number of programs – including those that show students the opportunities that await after graduation.
Additionally, we will use every tool we have to work toward a viable cost of living in Milwaukee for all.
Regardless of Tuesday’s outcome, MMAC will continue to fight for public policy that balances affordability with an improved quality of life in our community.
In service,
Dale Kooyenga
President, MMAC
