If you are in the business of constructing or operating a building, you are likely familiar with LEED®. This globally recognized rating system, created by the U.S. Green Building Council, establishes a framework for accomplishing environmentally sustainable building projects.
In May, Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum proudly announced being recognized with LEED® Platinum certification, highlighting the organization’s commitment to sustainable initiatives related to water, waste, transportation and human experience.
“Sustainability has been at the heart of Fiserv Forum since its inception. We strive to improve our sustainability efforts year after year,” said Dennis Williams, Fiserv Forum Senior Vice President and General Manager. “Achieving LEED® Platinum status after previously earning Silver and Gold Certifications is a direct result of our hard work and dedication to creating a healthy, safe, sustainable environment for our fans, employees and the city of Milwaukee,” said Williams.
Fiserv Forum stands alongside Portland’s Moda Center as the only two NBA arenas to achieve Platinum status. This certification also positions Fiserv Forum as the first Platinum sports venue in Wisconsin.
The arena tracked its sustainability efforts over 12 months using the software platform Arc, and is proud to share its efforts in the following categories:
Water
- Addition of touchless faucets
- Improvement of domestic water tracking
- Implementation of an improved water treatment plan to reduce water consumption in cooling towers
Waste
- Implementation of a trash sorting program
- Increase in recycling efforts
- Implementation of new food waste practices using the Orca Food Digester
Transportation
- Addition of Bubblr bikes and Lyft stations outside of the arena
Human experience
- Installation of Kaiterra air quality and safety sensors
“Our city is committed to progress that’s not just visible but also responsible. [This certification] shows that we value innovation, not just for innovation’s sake, but we value innovation because it strengthens our communities and improves our quality of life here in the city,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
