Introducing the AALAM Leadership Series
AALAM - Angela/Denise

Denise Thomas, left, and Angela Adams appear at AALAM’s inaugural Leadership Series event, The Room & the Roadmap

By Angela S. Adams, AALAM CEO

Leadership is not static – it evolves through courage, reflection and practice. At AALAM, we believe leadership is most powerful when it is grounded in purpose, strengthened through skill building and amplified through shared experience. That belief is what inspired the launch of our new AALAM Leadership Series.

What makes this series distinct is its intentional design. Each Leadership Series experience goes beyond storytelling to include a live leadership session, where participants engage directly with practical tools, frameworks and strategies they can apply immediately in their personal and professional lives. It is both conversation and cultivation – inspiration paired with action.

Our inaugural Leadership Series – The Room & The Roadmap brought this vision to life, and we were honored to feature Denise M. Thomas, a proud AALAM alumna whose journey reflects the very heart of our mission. Denise is a globally sought-after communication coach and speaker, yet she remains deeply connected to Milwaukee – serving as both an ambassador for what’s possible here and a beacon of light wherever her work takes her.

In addition to a powerful conversation, Denise led an engaging leadership session that challenged participants to think differently about voice, presence, and influence – hallmarks of the signature leadership program at AALAM.

We’re proud to share her insights with you.

  1. How has your leadership journey shaped your perspective on opportunity and growth?

My leadership journey has taught me that opportunity is not always given, and it is often created, claimed and cultivated. As someone who has frequently been “the only one in the room,” I’ve learned that growth comes from leaning into discomfort, trusting your voice and recognizing that your perspective is a leadership asset versus a limitation. Growth happens when we shift from seeking permission to owning our presence.

  1. How did AALAM influence your leadership and approach?

AALAM has been a powerful example of what intentional leadership development looks like when it is rooted in community, accountability and excellence. It reinforced the importance of investing in leaders holistically across skillset, mindset, identity and impact. My experience with AALAM deepened my commitment to developing leaders who perform and. more importantly, transform the spaces they lead within.

  1. What communication habits are critical for leadership impact?

At the core of leadership impact is communication as a critical way to connect when speaking.

I always anchor leaders in my 3C Model™:

  • Clarity: Say what needs to be said with intention and purpose
  • Concise: Eliminate noise and get to what matters
  • Connection: Ensure your message lands with the audience you are leading

In addition, listening to understand and not to respond is one of the most powerful habits a leader can build.

  1. Why is cross-sector leadership development important?

Cross-sector leadership development is important because it expands perspective, challenges assumptions and drives innovation. When leaders are exposed to different industries, communities and ways of thinking, they become more agile, more inclusive in their decision-making, and more effective in solving complex challenges. The future of leadership requires collaboration across boundaries. Leaders cannot effectively operate in silos.

  1. What is one practical leadership shift professionals can make?

One of the most powerful shifts a leader can make is moving from a reactive mindset to a reflective one. Before responding, take a moment to pause, assess and choose your response intentionally. Reflection creates space for better decision-making, stronger communication and more aligned leadership.

  1. What does effective leadership look like today?

Effective leadership today is human-centered, adaptable and grounded in trust. Leaders no longer need to have all the answers all the time. Today, it’s about creating environments where people feel seen, heard and empowered to contribute. Today’s leaders must be able to navigate change, communicate with authenticity and lead with both confidence and compassion.
