Milwaukee’s strong business ecosystem today is largely thanks to the companies that laid their foundation here decades ago and continue to call the region home.

Founded in 1926 by Walter Hartwig, Hartwig Exhibit and Display’s Milwaukee roots run deep. The full-service exhibit and display company opened its first office in the heart of downtown, where the Fiserv Forum stands today. Hartwig later moved to Van Buren Street, before relocating to its current 67,000-square-foot facility in New Berlin.

“What has kept us here is not just heritage but Milwaukee’s perfect positioning for cross-country shipping and access to major trade shows,” said Hartwig President Goran Vlatkovic. “Being based in the Midwest allows us to serve clients efficiently nationwide while still maintaining close relationships with the local community.”

Coming up on its 100th anniversary of business, the company is highly skilled at adapting to meet the needs of its clients. Hartwig has been a producer of window displays, billboards, mobile advertising vehicles, museum exhibits and more. The company’s diverse portfolio includes standout projects like NASA exhibits, World War II military training aids, world fair participation and the construction of Washington’s hydro dam exhibit. Today, Hartwig’s main focus is on the world of trade shows, providing solutions like portable and modular systems, as well as custom exhibits.

“Our history is, in many ways, the history of modern America exhibiting itself. The photographs and testimonials in our archives highlight decades of innovation and creativity,” said Vlatkovic.

Vlatkovic purchased the company from the Hartwig family in June 2025, making him the first individual outside of the Hartwig family to lead the business. Vlatkovic shared that as company president, he feels it is important to preserve Hartwig’s values and culture. This means keeping the team together and welcoming new team members with fresh energy.

“My own journey began as a project manager, followed by roles as department supervisor and later, account executive. Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for every part of the business and for the talented people who make it all possible,” said Vlatkovic. “Having a great team by my side and a history that brings with it decades of experience has made the transition seamless.”

Not only has the company remained in the Milwaukee region since 1926, but it is also one of MMAC’s longest-standing members. The company joined the association in 1933, making 2025 its 92nd year of membership.

“For us, it is not simply about longevity, but about being part of an organization that shares our values of innovation, collaboration and economic development,” said Vlatkovic.

As Hartwig looks forward to the next decade, the company plans to continue to adapt to the needs of its clients while exploring avenues for improvement.
