A night to mingle in the nation’s capitol

Hundreds of Milwaukeeans, and Milwaukeeans at heart, descended upon Washington D.C. Tuesday night to network with legislators, promote the contributions of the region and enjoy themselves.

The 33rd-annual Milwaukee Night in D.C., held at Union Station in the shadows of the nation’s capitol building, was attended by about 300.

MMAC President Tim Sheehy provided some insight into the event’s purpose and history.

“The purpose of this event was to recognize and thank Wisconsin’s delegation, and importantly their staff, for the work seen and unseen that they engage in to help our local government and the employers that call Milwaukee home,” he said. “Our collective goal is a globally competitive Milwaukee that supports high-value jobs to sustain a vibrant quality of life for all.”

Prior to introducing the mayor and county executive, Sheehy praised his co-hosts – Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley – for their leadership in moving the region forward.

“Milwaukee continues to rise, and we are grateful to have two new leaders help lead that rise,” Sheehy said. “They are helping ensure it’s a lift that impacts everyone in the community.”

In addition to elected officials, MKE 2024 Host Committee Chairman Reince Priebus spoke to promote the upcoming 2024 Republican National Convention – scheduled in July 2024.

The night was capped for a number of the attendees with a dinner featuring a Q&A with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin, speaking at her first Milwaukee Night in D.C. since 2013, touched on a number of subjects – including recent news about her work in attempting to secure regional tech hub status for the state to bolster medical and bio-health technology in Wisconsin.

“It’s clear to me that Wisconsin has incredible assets,” she said – pointing specifically to its research institutions and concentration of manufacturing.

She added her excitement about the outcomes that could come out of the state with a tech hub designation.

“It holds the potential of ending cancer as we know it, Alzheimer’s as we know it. It really has a lot of potential and it could happen in Wisconsin,” she said.
