Putting aside partisan differences to move Wisconsin forward

We thank Gov. Tony Evers, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu and their respective legislative bodies for advancing a compromise agenda that puts Wisconsin first. In 40 years of working with the Legislature, this compromise may rank as one of the most promising ever to position Wisconsin and Milwaukee to compete for jobs and capital investment.

The compromise includes a historic funding package of more than $1B for all publicly funded K-12 students across Wisconsin – those served by public, independent charter, and private schools in one of the State’s choice programs. In the City of Milwaukee, nearly half of the students are served by independent charter and schools in the choice program. In addition, the package helps close the per pupil funding gap with MPS, increases support for traditional public schools and provides more aid for special education. This unique investment serves all students.

In addition, over the course of several months, we have witnessed cooperation from leadership – both state and local – not seen in a very long time. While the sides came to the table with very different political philosophies, we’re encouraged that legislators were able tackle the fiscal catastrophe facing the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County. There was no room to kick this debt down the road; the next kick was off the cliff. Congrats to Mayor Cavalier Johnson and County Executive David Crowley for taking a stand and delivering new revenue dedicated to address the pressing pension debt impacting city and county services, including public safety.

The work is not yet done. Votes still need to be taken in the state capitol and the budget must be signed by the governor. Because of this legislation, we will have more tools to compete for jobs and capital investment, growing our prosperity. 

This is what leadership looks like, this is what good governance looks like.
